Summary of subjects covered:
1. Garbage: Consensus of the meeting was
that the handing out of bungies was successful and improved the deer and
raccoon resistance of garbage cans with less garbage around. Participation
needs to be improved.
2.
Saturday and Sunday Garbage pick-up downtown: The cost of this
additional service was about $2600 and was paid for by the FHCA.
Considering trying to have this included in the general garbage contract
negotiations next year.
3. Newsday Article critical of
building boom on the dunes: The FHCA has no opinion on this subject.
4. Medical Emergency: Questions
arose this last summer concerning the duties of the Medical District
Emergency Doctor in Fair Harbor. Member voiced concerns regarding the
perceived lack of response and attitude. Mr. Brozan, Medical District
Deputy Commissioner is looking at possible improvements:
a) Change Qualification Requirement for service
b) Obtain a Medic Go-Cart equipped with portable phones etc.
5. Toilet Issue: Mr. Levy is asking
for active support on this issue.
He is planning the following for the winter:
a) Write Health District that the suggested permanent proposal is not
workable.
b) Suggest the Old Fire House ( which Mr. Levy thinks will be turned
down).
c) Then pressure the Town of Islip to find a solution.
d) Convince the Fire District to change position and start helping to find
a workable solution.
e) Look into the feasibility of using the LIPA property at Bay and Oak.
Other solutions voiced:
a) FD property at Elm and Central. Not clear if buildable
b) A a permanent toilet to the "Doctors House"
c) Sell the "Doctors House" and buy another within required distances for
Doctor and toilets.
Mrs. Feder entered the following resolution:
RESOLUTION SEEKING HELP FROM THE FIRE DISTRICT TO SITE BATHROOM TO GET
LIFEGUARDS:
WHEREAS, lifeguards have, in the past, saved the lives of a number of Fair
harbor residents and are essential for safe swimming in the ocean; and
WHEREAS, New York State law requires bathrooms proximate to public beaches
with lifeguards; and
WHEREAS, the Fair harbor Fire District has control of publicly owned real
estate that can site a bathroom; and
WHEREAS, other sites are not available; and
THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Fair Harbor Community Association asks
that the Fire District take an active role in resolving this issue by
siting the public bathroom on one of the properties along the Bay Beach
that they control; and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that all extra costs for constructing and
maintaining such a bathroom be paid from the Lifeguard District
Resolution accepted with one dissention.
Mr. Gursky, Fire Commissioner then spoke on the Fire District
position and suggested to register and vote. This being the proper and
most powerful way of affecting policy change.
Fire District position is: Their charter does not require involvement /
not a community issue.
The consensus here seems to be that neither the FHCA nor the other
Districts are the proper forum for a solution, but rather the Town of
Islip should take the lead in making the tough decisions with input and
guidance from Fair Harbor residents. Unfortunately Islip still needs the
proper motivation to advance the process.
6. Beach: Erica Feder Deputy Commissioner
of the Beach Erosion District reported that the beach looks good and that
they may want to consider beach-scraping.
