FHCA meeting 7/23/2000:

Mosquitoes and
West Nile Virus

Mosquito Control Effort
(Status 8/14/00)

Mosquitoes are a natural part of our environment. It is not possible to eliminate them totally nor is it probably desirable. Some species of mosquitoes can travel extensive distances. What distance is not certain and depends on such environmental factors as: amount of rainfall, prevailing wind direction, heat conditions, etc. Therefore we cannot be certain how many mosquitoes originate outside our community and whether our programs are effective. One thing is clear: all communities, homeowners and agencies need to work together to be most effective for the benefit of all.

The Goal: To decrease the number of adult mosquitoes that potentially could transmit harmful diseases to humans.

Fair Harbor or the FHCA does not have the political power, taxing authority, manpower or monies to implement a comprehensive mosquito control program. Instead the community has to rely on existing organizations, homeowners, renters or government agencies to achieve its goals.

#1- Control of Breeding within the Boundaries of Fair Harbor

#2- Control of Mosquitoes Outside of Fair Harbor

#3- Control and Monitoring of Mosquitoes

#4- Public Education and Awareness

#5- Action Plan

Please be aware that the FHCA is made up of individuals volunteering their time and effort. No guarantee is made or implied that the above outlined goals and outcomes will be achieved. Any action plan is subject to the manpower available and the willingness of outside agencies to cooperate and share information in a timely fashion. The FHCA does not recommend or disapprove the use of any pesticide or treatment. Homeowners are solely responsible for any action taken on their property and should consult appropriate authorities (DEC, EPA, FINS, Islip, Suffolk County Department of Health and others) with any questions concerning the efficacy and advisability of any treatment, pesticides, health or public safety questions. Permits may be required by various agencies and should obtained in advance.
