#2- Control of Mosquitoes Outside of Fair Harbor

GOAL #1

Influence FINS to treat lands under their jurisdiction with the larvicide Vectolex, and to clear drainage ditches that flow over FINS lands.

Request Superintendent Dillon of FINS to implement a larval stage mosquito control program.

Request Congressman Lazio to use his office to influence FINS and the National Park Service (NPS) to treat FINS properties.

Consider informing media of the potential health risks of the decision FINS / NPS not to participate in a larvae reduction program.

Action Taken / Necessary

Call and write letters (in process).

GOAL #2

Support surrounding communities, i.e. Dunewood and Saltaire, to take steps to control mosquitoes in their communities to minimize migration into Fair Harbor.

Considerations / Action Taken / Necessary

Saltaire in cooperation with Vector Control implements the treatment of Mosquito larvae in saltwater marshes with Altacid by helicopter. Altacid acts like Vectolex, but is specifically designed for use on saltwater mosquitoes.

Saltaire is prohibited from the application of systemic pesticides, other than in a declared health emergency, due to Saltaire being mapped (abt. 50%) as wetlands.

Stay in contact with the Village of Saltaire and offer help and support in their mosquito effort (ongoing).

Please be aware that the FHCA is made up of individuals volunteering their time and effort. No guarantee is made or implied that the above outlined goals and outcomes will be achieved. Any action plan is subject to the manpower available and the willingness of outside agencies to cooperate and share information in a timely fashion. The FHCA does not recommend or disapprove the use of any pesticide or treatment. Homeowners are solely responsible for any action taken on their property and should consult appropriate authorities (DEC, EPA, FINS, Islip, Suffolk County Department of Health and others) with any questions concerning the efficacy and advisability of any treatment, pesticides, health or public safety questions. Permits may be required by various agencies and should obtained in advance.
