#4- Public Education and Awareness

GOAL #1

Inform residents of the Mosquito Control Effort described herein. 

Action Taken / Necessary

Direct mailing of some version of this document.
Placement of document on website (done: 8/10 version).
Have educational materials for renters and homeowners (done/available).
Prepare package to be placed at the Pioneer Store on 7/29 and  8/5 (done) 

GOAL #2

Gain consent from homeowners with standing water from rainwater runoff to apply Vectolex and Bti. on their private property. Homeowners to inform tenants.

A Non-Treatment Form has been created to allow residents to notify Vector Control and/or FHCA if they wish to opt out of Vectolex and/or Bti. treatment.

Action Taken / Necessary

Visit houses that are perceived to have standing water problems and explain the Vectolex and Bti. Program and obtain signature on release form. See action plan #2 above (mostly done). 

GOAL #3

Educate the public about how to reduce mosquito breeding around their homes.

Educate the public about ways to avoid contact with mosquitoes and how to treat mosquito bites, and distribute medical information on the West Nile virus.

Distribution of information compiled to residents through direct mailing, bulletin boards, and website

Action Taken / Necessary

Compile necessary information (done).

Establish hyper-links to Department of Health, relevant governmental agencies, and relevant medical agencies from the FHCA web-site (done).

Direct mailing and placement on bulletin boards & website of information complied, including the MDS of pesticides used by Vector Control (ongoing)

Notify public as soon as possible, if decision is made that systemic spraying is required for adult mosquitoes (ongoing).

Hold public information meeting/s addressing residents concerns (done 7/23, next meeting 8/20, ongoing). 

Actions Planned

Notification of residents of the need to spray via postings and web-site (done for week of 8/14/00).

Develop notice of spraying including MDS for pesticide to be sprayed in advance so that it can be quickly reproduced and disseminated to residents if necessary (done).

 

Please be aware that the FHCA is made up of individuals volunteering their time and effort. No guarantee is made or implied that the above outlined goals and outcomes will be achieved. Any action plan is subject to the manpower available and the willingness of outside agencies to cooperate and share information in a timely fashion. The FHCA does not recommend or disapprove the use of any pesticide or treatment. Homeowners are solely responsible for any action taken on their property and should consult appropriate authorities (DEC, EPA, FINS, Islip, Suffolk County Department of Health and others) with any questions concerning the efficacy and advisability of any treatment, pesticides, health or public safety questions. Permits may be required by various agencies and should obtained in advance.
