Scenario #1

If mosquito activity is low to moderate and no evidence of virus in either mosquitoes or birds are found on Fire Island AND/OR Town of Islip.

 Scenario #2

If mosquito activity is high but no evidence of the virus is found in either mosquitoes or birds on Fire Island AND/OR Town of Islip.

Actions Planned

Continue with actions in Categories 1, 2, 3 & 4 above.

Scenario #3

If mosquitoes / birds on Fire Island (FINS) or in the Town of Islip (mainland) test positive for carrying West Nile.

Actions Planned

Continue with actions in Categories 1, 2, 3 & 4 above.

Notify the public of test results.

Notify FINS that a potential health risk exists and that they should be prepared to apply systemic pesticides on lands under their jurisdiction.

Contact Vector Control to learn of their intentions and request them to apply systemic pesticides.

Notify residents through postings and the web-site of intended actions by the authorities. Authorities are required to notify the newspapers 24 hours before application.

 Scenario #4

If Vector Control or Department of Health determines independently that Fire Island (non FINS* Property) should be sprayed with systemic pesticides (ground and/or by air)

Continue with actions in Categories 1, 2, 3 & 4 above.

 * FINS pointed out that they would under no circumstances independently decide to apply systemic pesticides.
