How to Improve FH?

Back To The Beach!                                              April 2001

I can hardly believe that spring is upon us already. So what are our plans to make things nicer at Fair Harbor? Perhaps nothing? It's up to us. Who will pick up the torch and march proudly forward? Too theatrical?

I received many responses from the survey that was mailed to you last October. The results of the survey show amazingly similar answers and suggestions. Unanimously, the number one concern was the garbage. The second issue on most everyone's mind is the lack of representation and dialogue with the Town of Islip regarding laws that govern us and the agencies to contact if and when there is a need or problem.

I waited until the majority of responses were in, compiled the data and sent our suggestions to the board members in December. Of course that was in the winter and thoughts of Fire Island were diminishing. I understand that there is a FHCA meeting scheduled on May 20. The board may or may not address any of the questions or suggestions that I brought forward. The focus for this first meeting is the Medical District. Perhaps if you attend, you can bring up some issues that concern you!

Okay, here's the deal! Let's at least fix the garbage problem and get some useful information to the homes in Fair Harbor.

In an attempt to fix these problems, it has been suggested that we reestablish the Block Captain program. We're looking for at least one person and one alternative to represent their walk. Responsibilities will include helping the people on your walk with issues regarding noisy neighbors, garbage etc., and creating a sense of involvement, commitment and pride for your walk. For example, it has been suggested that we have block social get togethers or at least informal meetings occasionally.

Block Captain requirements:

1- Be available to attend a quick status meeting -first Saturday of each month at 10am. (May-Sep)
2- Deliver a questionnaire and the Fair Harbor Guide to each house on your walk.
3- Commit to spending up to 7 days this season for 15 -30 minutes per day to janitor the bay front. (Hopefully the community will find and allocate funds for an attendant to do this daily task in the future.)
4- Have an e-mail address. (The best way to pass on info)

If you feel passionate about the garbage problem and other issues and can dedicate some time, consider becoming a Block Captain for your walk. We can have a lot of fun! If you have interest in becoming a Block Captain, E-mail me at keysel@calcart.com

First meeting- 44 Cranberry Walk

11/1/00 - Ken Eysel recently spent a lot of his personal time thinking and asking about how to improve Fair Harbor. Following is his letter and questionnaire. If you haven't completed that questionnaire yet, please print, complete and (e-)mail it to Ken
