National Park Service Seeks New
Volunteers at William Floyd Estate
The National Park Service is looking for volunteers to
work at the William Floyd Estate, a unit of Fire Island National Seashore
located in Mastic Beach, NY. The William Floyd Estate is the ancestral
home of a signer of the Declaration of Independence and it contains the
house, grounds and cemetery used by eight generations of the Floyd family.
Volunteers are needed to help support visitor services by
conducting house tours, working on the grounds, and assisting with museum
work. Fire Island National Seashore superintendent Constantine Dillon
stated, "National parks rely upon a remarkable crew of civilian volunteers
to fulfill their missions of protecting natural and historical resources
and providing for visitor enjoyment. From retired teachers to high school
students, we have devoted volunteers from all walks of life. Volunteering
in the national parks can provide fulfilling and valuable experiences." If
you have some free time and would like to explore volunteer opportunities
at the William Floyd Estate, please contact the unit manager Richard
Stavdal at (631) 399-2030. All volunteers will be provided with training,
uniforms, and other kinds of support.
Fire Island National Seashore was established as a
National Seashore in 1964 for the purpose of conserving and preserving for
the use of future generations relatively unspoiled and undeveloped
beaches, dunes, and other natural features as examples of unspoiled areas
of great natural beauty. The National Park Service is charged to
"administer and protect the Fire Island National Seashore with the primary
aim of conserving the natural resources located there," (Public Law
88-587).
Information about the National Seashore may be obtained
from the park web site at www.nps.gov/fiis or by calling (631) 289-4810. |
