Constantine J. Dillon Selected as Superintendent of Horace Albright
Training Center at the Grand Canyon
(Washington, D.C.) --- National Park Service (NPS) Director Fran
Mainella today announced the selection of Constantine (Costa) J. Dillon as
the superintendent of the National Park Service’s Albright Training Center
located in Grand Canyon National Park (AZ). Costa was selected for this
prestigious position from among several other applicants.
“I am very happy to announce that Costa Dillon has accepted the
superintendency of one of the service’s most important training centers.
Costa has proven himself to be a creative and effective manager and will
provide outstanding leadership for the Albright Training facility,” said
Mainella. “His long record of dedication to the NPS makes him an excellent
selection for this new responsibility.”
As superintendent of the Albright Training Center, Dillon will be
responsible for managing a center that provides training and development
for all new NPS employees; Maintenance; Supervision, Management, &
Leadership; and Natural Resources Stewardship. “I am looking forward to
taking on the responsibilities of superintendent of the National Park
Service’s training center at the Grand Canyon. It is an honor to carry on
the tradition of this center and its role in developing the National Park
Service’s professional workforce.”
Constantine J. Dillon comes to the Albright Training Center from Fire
Island National Seashore (NY) where he has served as superintendent since
1997. His more than five years there have been very successful and have
seen the expansion of partnerships, a 50% increase in visitation, the
development of a professional workforce, and improvements in visitor
facilities. During his tenure substantial improvements to the resource
management program have resulted in unprecedented success in piping plover
recovery, management of the nation’s only immuno-contraception program for
deer management, and a nation-leading program in mosquito monitoring to
protect public health. (more)
While at Fire Island Dillon received a number of awards including the
Department of the Interior Superior Service Award (May 2002), Secretary of
the Interior’s Award for Long-Term Achievement in Diversity (2000), the
Regional Director’s Safety Award (1999), and the National Park
Conservation Association’s Stephen T. Mather Award for Resource
Stewardship (1999). Under his leadership the park received the Secretary
of the Interior’s Unit Award for Excellence of Service in 2002 and
recognition for the Seashore’s September 11 response and assistance to New
York City.
Costa is a 23-year veteran of the NPS, having served in a variety of
other areas in the system. He began his career at Independence National
Historical Park in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania where he served as an
interpretive park ranger. He eventually went on to Carlsbad Caverns
National Park (NM), Gettysburg National Military Park (PA) and Eisenhower
National Historic Site (PA), Hubbell Trading Post National Historic Site
(AZ), and Santa Monica Mountains National Recreation Area (CA). His first
superintendency was at Homestead National Monument of America (NE) where
he served from 1993-1997. In 1997 he became superintendent of Fire Island
National Seashore.
Mr. Dillon is a native of Groton, Connecticut. He has a Bachelor of
Science degree in Park Planning and Management from the University of
California at Davis. He is married and has one daughter, age 7.
