Excerpt from a letter written by Chairman Rudikoff to the FIA regarding the Saltaire Fire:
"... When the alarm sounded, Chief Scott Cherveny of the Fair Harbor Fire Department responded to the scene prior to the arrival of any equipment from Saltaire or Kismet .... All available (Fair Harbor) equipment and 12 fire fighters, including two or three ...  from the mainland (responded). A deck gun was used to put enough water onto the fire so that other departments could approach with standard hose nozzles. The Fair Harbor Fire Department was on the scene fighting this fire for approximately six hours and then spent many additional hours repacking equipment and assisting Saltaire....."
