Drill Team 1998

Welcome Home (Spring 1999)
Welcome back to your oasis in this hectic, chaotic world of ours. We hope your summer will be as enjoy able as you could hope for. The beach in Fair Harbor is in fairly good shape, although some neighboring communities have not fared as well. Everyone is remarking about how clean the Bay appears. You can see the bottom of the Bay from the end of the main dock. Let's hope the fishing is as good as the viewing.

There have been a number of improvements over the winter including new cement work in front of the "Old" firehouse and a new siren at the corner of Oak and Central. We've arranged to keep the siren on Fair Harbor time, i.e., the noon siren still goes off at 12:07.

1999 got off to a bad start. Two signal 13 alarms (structural fire) have been sounded so far. One alarm was in Saltaire on January 3rd and the second, in Cherry Grove, on April 14th your department, along with others, responded in both cases. At each alarm one house was totally lost and two others damaged. And in both cases faulty electrical services are at least partially to blame. Which leads us to suggest that having your electrician check over your system may be the smartest investment you can make. Many older homes were wired with "light" summer usage in mind, at a time when there were far fewer energy-hungry gadgets. The present day consequences could be a totally inadequate electrical system. Find out about it and have it updated before you find out about it in a costly and tragic way. Enough with the sermons.

On a more upbeat note, this summer your department will host pancake breakfasts and a Labor Day parade complete with a kids' float contest, marching band and hot dogs, soda pop and ice cream galore. Please join us. And speaking of joining us, if you'd be interested, please stop by the "back" house any 3rd Sunday of the month a little before 9:30 am, and someone will be glad to talk it over with you. Some hard work, a lot of fun and a great deal of personal satisfaction await you when you become a member of the department or the auxiliary.

It's a wonderful way to make a contribution to the community. And speaking of contributions, while your tax dollars cover fire fighting equipment and other important expenses, we use donations to cover the cost of things like hot dogs & ice cream for the Kids Parade, the "Photo Ops", and uniforms for department members involved in the Fire Island Fire Department Tournament. We will be happy with any amount you'd like to contribute.

Check out the photos on the following pages. Maybe you'll be in them next year. Have a wonderful summer.

Excerpt from a letter written by Chaiman Rudikoff to the FIA:

"... When the alarm sounded, Chief Scott Cherveny of the Fair Harbor Fire Department responded to the scene prior to the arrival of any equipment from Saltaire or Kismet .... All available (Fair Harbor) equipment and 12 fire fighters, including two or three ...  from the mainland (responded). A deck gun was used to put enough water onto the fire so that other departments could approach with standard hose nozzles. The Fair Harbor Fire Department was on the scene fighting this fire for approximately six hours and then spent many additional hours repacking equipment and assisting Saltaire....."
