Organized in 1931 by a small group of home owners, the Fair Harbor
Fire Department will celebrate 70 years of dedicated service to the Fire
Island communities of Fair Harbor, Dunewood and Lonelyville. The FHFD
will conduct festivities all summer including a special open house on
Sunday July 8 from 10am to 2pm.
The July 8th open house will feature an exhibit of vintage photos and
documents, fire equipment and vehicles as well as the new super pumped
truck put into service this spring. There will be demonstrations of fire
fighting equipment and information pertaining to fire safety. A new
video, produced by filmmaker Susan Chadburn, on the 70 year history of
the department will screened in the firehouse.
The Fair Harbor Fire Department is a full time volunteer
organization. Members are men and women who must complete a 55 hour
State Certified training course supplemented by monthly year round
drills. Given the summer vacation nature of the community, a limited
number of year round residents man the department in the colder months.
The year round members mostly work in the community as builders,
landscapers and real estate brokers. From April to November, the Fire
District grows in population with homeowners and renters seeking the
sun, sea breeze and water sports. The community consequently becomes
densely populated and the risk of fire is greatest. The Fire Department
also grows with city people who come from their office jobs to become
volunteer fire fighters.
Other events this summer include an old time White Elephant sale
organized by the Fire Department's auxiliary and the 70th Anniversary
Celebration Labor Day Parade on September 2nd. Kids, costumes, marching
bands, hot dogs, ice cream and fun for all.
