| Lot 6 as Fair Harbor was known in 1878 and without apparent owners was
originally purchased by Davis Sammis. In 1923 Captain Selah Clock and
George Weeks purchased the property from the Sammis estate and founded
Fair Harbor.
The original houses were modest dwellings targeted to the working man
from Bay Shore. One such house you can still see at 15 Holly which is
believed to have been built in that era.
The builders went bankrupt in the 1930's and the
1938 hurricane
wiped out 70 out of 78. In the 1950's people found confidence and
wealth to start building on the barrier beach again. The 60's saw a
building boom (about 300 total houses). Today Fair Harbor has about 425
buildings.
The makeup of the community has changed over the decades. Early on it
was families, the 80's saw large numbers of young New York professionals
in group houses. Towards the end of the 90's that mix has swung back
to families as previous "groupers" founded families and bought houses. An
unverified number I heard recently (1999) was about 15% group houses. |
