This section, once completed, will provide Beach specific landscaping and gardening advice. We thank Cornell Cooperative Extension, Suffolk County for most of the material here. Some of it is from our experience gardening in wet and swampy sites.

Q. I heard that you did research about where to buy sand and dirt. We need to get some. What do you recommend? Happy gardening!

A. I have been buying from from several contractors. Cost is between $160 and $200 per load (dumped from the truck, which may not be at your property) of about 3 to 3.5 qyds. Low end if you order several, higher I guess for one load. Remember, the cost is in the transport not in the material. For planting I've been mixing 50% Topsoil and 50% Sharp Sand mixed (or perhaps 75% topsoil and 25% sharp sand). For fill use whatever sand is cheapest to give the guys a break, but do not use topsoil for that purpose.
P.S. Sharp Sand as opposed to beach sand is considered better for roots.
