Evacuation Procedure

EVACUATION PROCEDURES

FOR HURRICANES OR OTHER EMERGENCIES

INC. VILLAGE OF SALTAIRE

The Board of Trustees has decided that, upon determining that hurricane-force winds, or other dangerous weather conditions, may affect the Village within a 24-hour period, the Village shall issue an alert, with a RECOMMENDATION that all residents begin evacuating to the mainland while scheduled ferry service is still in operation.

The alert will be in the form of an INTERMITTENT SIREN signal broadcast by the Security and Fire vehicles, accompanied by loudspeaker announcements of the evacuation notice. This alarm MAY be preceded by a sounding of a general alarm, either intermittent or continuous, by the Village fire alarm siren systems.

In the event that Suffolk, Islip or Saltaire officials direct a MANDATORY evacuation, the same siren signals will be given and residents will be advised that the evacuation is mandatory. FAILURE TO COMPLY
MAY RESULT IN THE TAKING OF SUCH APPROPRIATE ACTIONS AS MAY BE PRESCRIBED BY LAW.

IF THERE IS A DANGER OF HAZARDOUS WEATHER STRIKING THE VILLAGE, BUT AN EVACUATION ADVISORY HAS NOT YET BEEN ISSUED, YOU SHOULD TAKE THE FOLLOWING PRECAUTIONS:

· Secure and store INDOORS any objects which can blow free in a storm and become hazardous, including DECK FURNITURE, UMBRELLAS, PLANTERS, etc.; also GARBAGE CANS, BICYCLES, WAGONS, TOOLS, and so on.

· Note which neighbors and friends are in the village and that they are aware of the potential emergency.

· Keep children and pets near or at home to avoid delays in finding them should an evacuation become necessary.

· Securely beach or berth boats to minimize storm damage.

· Keep apprised of weather reports, ferry schedules, and the village's status.

IF AN ALARM IS GIVEN TO EVACUATE:

· Quickly gather together family members and pets.

· Telephone friends and neighbors to make sure they have heard the alarm and are preparing to evacuate.

· Be sure doors and windows are secured and all potentially hazardous objects have been stored safely indoors.
· Shut off your electricity at the main. This will minimize the risk of fire.

· Advise Security of anyone you believe may not be evacuating or aware of the alarm.

PLEASE NOTE: ANY EVACUATION ADVISORY OR ORDER WILL BE GIVEN WELL IN ADVANCE OF
THE ARRIVAL OF A STORM. THERE WILL BE SUFFICIENT TIME FOR YOU TO TAKE THESE
PRECAUTIONS AND DEPART FOR THE MAINLAND. YOUR COOPERATION IN EVACUATING IN A
CALM, ORDERLY MANNER, AND HELPING ALERT OTHERS, IS NECESSARY.

COUNTY GUIDELINES MANDATE THAT ALL EMERGENCY SERVICES PERSONNEL (POLICE,
FIRE, COAST GUARD, ETC.) EVACUATE FIRE ISLAND WHEN STORM WINDS REACH 55 M.P.H.
ALL ELECTRIC POWER TO THE ISLAND WILL BE SHUT OFF AS EMERGENCY PERSONNEL
WITHDRAW TO THE MAINLAND.

PERSONS REFUSING TO EVACUATE ARE ADVISED THAT IT WILL BE IMPOSSIBLE TO ASSIST
THEM ONCE EMERGENCY PERSONNEL HAVE LEFT THE ISLAND. AUTHORITIES WILL ASK ANY
SUCH PERSONS TO FURNISH THEM WITH THE NAME AND ADDRESS OF NEXT-OF-KIN FOR
LATER NOTIFICATION.
